Advice for people with diabetes on what to eat and how to exercise

Diabetes is caused when the body can't break down blood glucose (also called blood sugar) correctly. Diabetes comes in many forms, and each needs another way to treat it. If a patient has diabetes or is at risk of getting it, their doctor may suggest they see a nutritionist. People with diabetes can live a healthy, balanced life with the Help of a doctor or another trained professional.

With diabetes, it's essential to do things like:

• Eat a diet full of natural, healthy foods, like whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, and healthy fats like nuts.

• Avoid sugary sodas, fried foods, and high-sugar desserts, which are high in sugar but don't provide any other nutrients.

• Not drinking at all or drinking no more than one drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men.

• Exercising at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, by walking, aerobics, bike riding, swimming, or some other activity.

• Keep an eye out for signs of low blood sugar while working out, like feeling dizzy, confused, weak, and sweating.

Those with type 2 diabetes who don't want to take medicine to manage their condition may also benefit from lowering their body mass index (BMI). Everyone with type 1 diabetes needs insulin, and some with type 2 diabetes to keep their blood sugar from getting too high. Insulin comes in different forms, usually grouped by how long their effects last. Insulin can have an immediate impact, a short development, an intermediate product, a prolonged effect, or a mix. Long-acting insulin is something that some people choose to use to keep their blood sugar levels low all the time. Others may use a mix of insulin types or insulin that works quickly. People with diabetes of any kind should always check their blood sugar levels. Two ways to measure blood sugar levels are with a continuous blood glucose monitor (CGM) and a blood glucose monitor that needs to be pricked on the skin. A continuous glucose monitor will take many readings throughout a typical day. This service can help you make changes to your medications.

Self-monitoring is the only way for a person with diabetes to know how much sugar is in their blood. Assuming a person's sugar level based on feelings could be dangerous unless they think they have very low sugar and need glucose quickly.

How many are too many?

When a person with diabetes takes insulin, they can be more active. But if it is used incorrectly or too much, it could cause serious problems. Hypoglycemia, or very low blood sugar, can cause a person to throw up, sweat, and shake if they take too much insulin. People with diabetes need to get the right amount of insulin, take the right medicine, and eat to keep their blood sugar levels steady and healthy.
